With planning for America250 underway, get to know the people behind the scenes with our spotlight series. We’ll be asking commissioners and staff about their passions, plans, and hopes for the future.
Meet Vice President of Marketing and Branding Jesse Askew – a Harlem, N.Y., native with a goal to make America250’s marketing efforts reflective of our nation’s rich culture and diversity.
A250: If you could have dinner with any person from U.S. history, dead or alive, who would it be? Why? What would you ask?
Reginald F. Lewis, the first Black American to build a billion-dollar company. I would love to talk to him about what sparked his dreams, goals, and vision for his career. We both received our undergraduate degrees from small historically Black colleges (HBCUs). It would also be a dream to have dinner with Frederick Douglass.
A250: What is your favorite quote by an American?
“You can only become accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” – Maya Angelou
A250: Describe your job in 3-5 words.
Forward-thinking creativity.
A250: What is a unique viewpoint from your home state that you’re excited to bring to this nationwide project?
I come with a “Harlem hustle” mindset, which has served me well throughout my career. My gift is the ability to outwork people. I am excited to bring that type of contagious energy to my team at America250.
A250: What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?
I co-produced a Sundance nominated film (This Revolution), co-owned an Indy Racing League team, and was on the Rocawear marketing team that created a worldwide brand.
A250: What does America250 and this moment mean to you?
America250 presents a unique opportunity to deepen our nation’s sense of culture for the next generation.
A250: Give us three fun facts about yourself.
I am such a “girl dad,” I can be the life of the party, and I played guard on my college’s Division II basketball team.
