To ensure that America250 is the largest and most inclusive commemoration in American history, we’ve created 11 advisory councils to expand the reach and resources of the America250 Foundation. Each council is a convening of a diverse group of invited volunteers who are nationally recognized thought leaders in their industries.

Led by two co-chairs, each advisory council is composed of 14 members whose objective is to provide expertise and insight on the planning of programs for America’s 250th anniversary. Currently there are several active councils, including:  Veterans, Military, and Family Members; International; Parks, Preservation, and Public Spaces; Arts and Culture; Sports and Entertainment; Health and Wellness; History Education; Hospitality and Tourism; Innovation, Science, and Entrepreneurship; and Youth Engagement and Young Leaders.

This month, we will feature four councils as we get to know more about their work through their co-chairs. First, we will focus on the Veterans, Military, and Family Member Advisory Council. Co-chaired by retired Major Generals Alfred Valenzuela, U.S. Army, and Peggy Combs, U.S. Army, this council engages veterans through their many community-level service organizations (VSOs/MSOs), active military members through the offices of the Department of Defense, and military family members through a wide variety of channels. This council will actively pursue ideas on how the Foundation might recognize the service and sacrifice of these Americans and their active contributions to preserving our freedoms and protecting our country.

Additionally, we will feature the Parks, Preservation, and Public Spaces Advisory Council co-chairs. Co-chaired by Jim Campi and Alan Spears, this council will ensure resources are directed to preserve and prepare locations where our collective and individual American stories unfold such as national and state parks, historic properties, and battlefields. This council will oversee America250 programs to preserve and promote the legacy of our constructed and natural environments.
